A Queens immigrant’s dash to a nearby doctor’s office ended in death when he was struck by an MTA bus with the right of way, police said Wednesday (22 Dec). Md Nazmul Ahsan, 63, was headed to pick something up for his wife when he stepped into the path of a Q39 bus on Broadway near Roosevelt Ave. in Jackson Heights about 7:20 p.m., cops and witnesses said.
Md Nazmul Ahsan, 63, was headed to pick something up for his wife when he stepped into the path of a Q39 bus on Broadway near Roosevelt Ave. in Jackson Heights, Queens, about 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The westbound bus had the green light when the native of Bangladesh entered the crosswalk and was knocked to the ground by its front bumper, according to police. “He was a family man through and through,” his son Nazimul Ahsan, 31, told the Daily News. “He immigrated here, like, 10 years ago. He came here for his two sons, for our better future, basically.”
Ahsan, of Ozone Park, was rushed by medics to Elmhurst Hospital Center with traumatic head injuries and later died there. He was an engineer in his homeland and a local governor with the Lions Club International, a global humanitarian organization, his son said. Ahsan was getting his new iPhone set up at a local business and asked his wife to wait there while he went to the doctor’s office to pick something up for her, the son said. “Half an hour went by, and my mom kept calling him but nobody was picking up,” Nazimul Ahsan said. “She was like, ‘Why is it taking so long?’ She walked out of the cell phone store, and I guess she saw the cop cars. And they told her someone got hit.”

The victim’s wife, fearing the worst, called her son. By the time they confirmed it was the family patriarch, Ahsan was already at the hospital.
“We thought, ‘OK, he isn’t picking up,’” recalled his son. “Maybe he forgot it or put the phone on silent. By the time they confirmed it, he was … still alive in surgery. We were in the lobby. we couldn’t go up due to COVID restrictions. He passed in the hospital at 11:25 p.m.” No charges were filed against the bus driver. A bystander who rushed to Ahsan’s aid was left reeling by the fatal accident. “What do you have to rush for?” lamented Sonam Tsering, 36. “There was thick blood coming from his head.”

An employee at the cell phone repair shop steps from the crash confirmed Ahsan had just dropped off his phone to get data transferred to a new device. “He was in a hurry, and he told me he was going to the doctor’s office,” said store worker Nadim Bhuiyan, 41. “His wife was with him.” “It was just unexpected,” said Nazimul Ahsan. “You expect people to die of old age or sickness, but he didn’t have any chronic illness, so he was a healthy 63-year-old. Just unexpected. We did not expect this at all.” (Daily News)
