Albany, 05 November 2021: Today, Senator John E. Brooks (D-Massapequa) and Assemblymember Monica P. Wallace (D-Lancaster) announced that their legislation (S1383/A711A711) to raise awareness of, and access to, home fire sprinklers in new residential construction has been signed into law. The legislation, which Assemblymember Wallace shepherded through the Assembly and Senator John Brooks (D-Long Island) carried in the Senate, requires that residential home builders provide buyers with an estimate for the cost of installing a fire sprinkler system in any new single- and two-family homes in New York State.
While sprinklers are mandated for new commercial structures and multifamily dwellings, they are not required for single- and two-family homes. Wallace and Brooks believe that providing homeowners with an estimate will help them recognize how affordable and worthwhile this lifesaving technology is.
“As an active volunteer firefighter for over 40 years, I understand how important fire safety planning is and how devastating the losses of a residential fire can be,” said Senator Brooks. “These systems can quickly put out a fire before it spreads and thereby avert potential disaster. I continue to support the brave men and women who protect our homes and lives, and this new law works to that end. I thank Governor Hochul for signing this important legislation and prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of the residents of New York State.”
“This new law ensures that homeowners are made aware of the option and cost of installing home fire sprinklers, which can dramatically reduce the risk of death or severe injury from fire,” said Assemblymember Wallace. “These systems cost about the same as a new granite countertop and could save the life of the homeowner, other occupants, and/or responding firefighters. I thank Governor Hochul for signing this legislation to encourage new homeowners to consider this lifesaving technology.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, sprinkler systems reduce the chance of death by fire by 80 percent, reduce fire damage by up to 97 percent, and reduce firefighter injuries by 65 percent. Installing this lifesaving system is very affordable. The average cost of fire sprinkler installation is $1.35 per square foot – less than $3,000 for a 2,000 square foot home. -Press Release
